NLSIU intake to be hiked from next year

Source: Times of India, 16 August 2009.

More aspiring lawyers can now hope to study at India’s premier law institute here. The National Law School of India University will open

its doors to 80 more students in the LLB course from the next academic year. Currently, there are 400 students studying LLB and 100 in LLM courses.

“There’s been a persistent demand to increase the intake. We’ve been planning to increase it, but were working on the infrastructure. This year, we devised a mechanism to improve infrastructure,” R Venkata Rao, vice-chancellor, NLSIU, told STOI. By 2013, the law school will have 400 more students.

NLSIU has two small classrooms for seminars and workshops.

“Now, we can easily accommodate around 30 students in the hostel. In the long term, we will need more accommodation,” he said.

Rao said the varsity will request the government to provide additional land to set up a world-class institute. The present campus can be used as a city centre.

CLAT 2009 sees increase in applicants

Source: Times of India, 11 May 2009.

Nearly 15,000 students will appear for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) on May 17. Test candidates will be vying for admission to undergraduate courses at the 11 national law schools — amounting to a total of only 1,100 seats. “We have witnessed an increase in the number of applicants this year. Last year, when the test was conducted for the first time, approximately 11,000 students took the CLAT,” informed Veer Singh, vice-chancellor, NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad.

Attributing this increase to the growing demand for legal services, he said, “Globalisation created the demand for legal services and the economic meltdown has given it another boost.” Moreover, added Singh, there has also been an increase in the number of law schools participating in the test. “Last year, only seven law schools participated. This year, the schools from Kochi, Lucknow, Raipur and Patiala have also joined in,” he said.

According to Singh, this year’s test will also see a change in the examination pattern. He stated, “Based on last year’s experience we decided to introduce certain changes. While the exam would contain 200 one-mark questions like last year, students can expect changes in the English and legal knowledge sections. The English section would now contain comprehension and general English questions. And, there will be 45 questions on legal aptitude instead of legal reasoning this year. The legal aptitude section would judge a candidate on his/her knowledge about current events in the legal world, important court rulings, judgments etc.”

Singh added that the coming years would continue to see changes in the examination pattern. “At a later stage, we also want to align CLAT with the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) conducted for admission to various law schools across US, Australia and Canada. Approximately 1.5 lakh aspirants from these countries take the test. LSAT has proven its credibility in terms of fairness of content and testing candidates on logical and verbal reasoning and language comprehension. So, we want to base the changes on LSAT to help make CLAT more reliable.”

But, is applying a foreign method of testing in India feasible? “Yes, as we will not be replicating LSAT — CLAT has its own peculiar problems such as local, gender and caste reservations. Besides, some take it online and some don’t. So, we will consider and address the entire spectrum of ‘problems’ before making our decision.”
