CLAT 2027: Expert Committee Formed to Redesign CLAT 2027
The Consortium of National Law Universities (CNLUs) has officially announced a major transformation for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).
In the 4th Advisory Board Meeting of the Consortium of NLUs — chaired by Justice Indu Malhotra (Former Judge, Supreme Court of India) — a resolution was passed to establish an Expert Committee to recommend medium and long-term reforms for both UG and PG CLAT exams.
Members of the Expert Committee
The newly formed Expert Committee includes eminent global and Indian legal academics:
- Prof. Dev Saif Gangjee — Professor of Law, St. Hilda’s College, University of Oxford (Co-Chair)
- Prof. Tarunabh Khaitan — Professor of Public Law, London School of Economics (LSE) (Co-Chair)
- Prof. Shyamkrishna Balganesh — Sol Goldman Professor of Law, Columbia Law School
- Prof. Pritam Baruah — Professor and Dean, School of Law, BML Munjal University
- Prof. Surabhi Ranganathan — Professor of International Law, University of Cambridge
Terms of Reference for the Committee
The Advisory Board has tasked the Committee with reviewing and reforming:
- Question quality
- Structure of the paper
- Syllabus and subject framework
- Comparative review of international entrance exams like LSAT (US) and LNAT (UK)
The Committee will ensure that the new CLAT pattern reflects global academic rigor, fairness, and analytical depth.
🔹 Public Consultation and Feedback
To make the reform process participatory, the Consortium has invited public feedback and suggestions on the Terms of Reference.
Interested candidates, educators, and legal professionals can submit inputs via the official Google Form available from 15th October 2025 to 4th November 2025.
This is a landmark opportunity for the legal education community to contribute directly to shaping the future of CLAT.
🔹 CLAT 2026 – The Transition Year
- Exam Date: 7th December 2025
- Applicants: Around 80,000 candidates across India
- Participating NLUs: 26
- Pattern: Current CLAT format (no change yet)
- Purpose: Final exam before implementation of reforms in 2027
The Consortium’s decision signifies the end of the old CLAT model that began in 2008 — and the beginning of a globally benchmarked law entrance test.
🔹 What to Expect from CLAT 2027
While the detailed blueprint is awaited, initial insights suggest:
- Increased emphasis on analytical and critical reasoning
- Greater weight on reading comprehension and application-based questions
- Broader scope to include international current affairs and legal principles
- More concept-based assessment than factual recall
The aim is to make CLAT a world-class legal aptitude test, preparing students not only for NLUs but also for global legal academia and practice.
🔹 A Short Look Back – The CLAT Journey
- 2008: CLAT launched, replacing multiple NLU-specific exams.
- 2025: 26 NLUs participate, with 80,000+ students annually.
